Marcelo Drügg Barreto Vianna Partner, Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu, São Paulo
Marcelo Drügg Barreto Vianna is a partner of Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu and Leader of the Sustainability and Corporate Social Responsibility Services in Brazil and also member of the Deloitte’s Global Sustainability and Climate Change Council.
Marcelo Drügg Barreto Vianna earned a bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, with a specialization in economic engineering, and a master’s degree and Ph.D. from the University of Birmingham in England.
He also earned a master’s and Doctorate in Engineering from the University of São Paulo. He is the author of technical articles and seminars related to environmental and sustainability issues, energy, and corporate governance.
He is also Vice President of the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) in Brazil and Chairman of the ICC Sustainable Development and Energy Committee. He is currently on the Board of the Alcoa Institute (having served as president) and also member of board of the Cancer Institute of the State of São Paulo.
Previously, he served as advisor for the United Nations Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean, and member of the Brazilian Confederation of Industry (CNI)-Environment and Land Usage Permanent Committee and also Chairman of the Environment Committee of the Brazilian Association of Aluminum (ABAL).
In this capacity, he provides consulting services in the areas of sustainability, environmental control and management, risk management, safety, occupational health, quality and technology, planning, corporate governance, energy, and development for the industrial and consumer sectors, governmental organizations and financial institutions. As a project director he was involved in several projects and programs in Europe, USA, Latin America (Mexico, Chile, Argentina, Venezuela, Colombia and Peru) and Africa, and he has considerable experience on corporate governance, energy, sanitation, finance, sustainability services and international relations activities in different countries.
He acted as adviser and participated as member of the Brazilian Delegation to the United Nations (Sustainable Development Council) in several occasions. Took part in several business seminars and workshops sponsored by the United Nations (FAO, UNESCO, WHO, UNIDO, UNEP) related to environmental impact studies, sustainability, planning, governance, energy and development.
He is also a consultant and adviser of the World Bank and IDB- Inter American Development Bank. He provided sustainability and social responsibility consulting services for financial institutions (national, international and multilaterals banks) and coordinated several EHS due diligences, compliances audits and Equator Principles assurance audits for banks, funds and financial institutions.
During his career, he has participated in several due diligences for M&A process for a wide range of companies, mining operations and financial institutions. From 1980 to 1992, he was responsible at Alcoa for the corporate areas of industrial engineering, environmental management, land use and planning, occupational health, and community relations for both Brazil and the Latin American region.
